Tiff's Trecker trip Fish Lake & Capital Reef NP
We left the nice cool lake to go to the very hot Capital Reef, to do neither of us new what. First we went to Fruita a little old city right in the NP and looked at all the old houses and farms and saw some nice deer. Next we went on a 1/4 of a mile hike well according to the sign were it began. Then it was about five and a half miles round trip. It was fun except the part when I through up right after it. My dad decided that he would go on a 2 mile hike without me and I slept in the trecker until he got back. We did our last hikes that were tiny, each less then a mile put together and on one, the wind picked up and my dad lost his favorite hat. Then we headed back to the lake and I had ramen noodles and dad had a hot dog, and we both had marshmallows.
The next day we went fishing and caught nothing. So we headed home.
Again I navigated and I did get us lost well I thought we were lost. We went on a nice road that turned into a dirt road and went through a bunch of mountains and then it took us down into Ephraim from there it was smooth sailing.
12,000 ft Uintahs 2009
In an attempt to escape the heat of summer Dennis, Taylor, Rusty, and I strapped on packs and headed to the top of the Uintahs. Well, not the top but we did camp for two nights at 11,000 feet. We traded comfortable beds and 100+ degrees for 72 degrees the hard ground and bugs.
We started at the Butterfly Trail head and backpacked 4 miles along the Highline Trail into Naturalist Basin then another 2 miles up to Blue Lake. Taylor made the whole hike only complaining about wanting food. The 20lb pack on this back hardly slowed him down on the way in.
We made it to Blue Lake in time to set up camp, do a little fishing where Taylor caught his first fish, ate dinner, and then watch the sun set behind the mountain at 6:45pm. It was too early to go to bed, but the sun was down... so we hiked back down the trail to what would became our nightly sit by the wild flower surrounded waterfall to watch the sun set over the Deuschesne Drainage.
I have determined that I am too old to sleep on the ground!!!
The second day I got up at 6:30 (see above) and went fishing. The lake was boiling with hungry fish jumping out of the water at the many mosquitoes. After Breakfast I gave Taylor the option of fishing all day or hiking around the basin and seeing all the different lakes. He just pointed to the peak above us and said "I want to go up there!" The peak he wanted to climb had a couple bands of cliffs that I couldn't see a way around so we compromised and went for the peak next to it. After 2.5 hours of climbing straight up a couple of different rock slides we were standing on top of an unnamed peak that was listed at 11,978ft. It was exciting for all of us, even Rusty who spent the next 45 min trying to locate the Pica that was not happy with his presence. We took an alternate route down and still got to see a couple of the other lakes in the basin. We then let Taylor lead the way back to camp and more fishing. After dinner (around 6:45) we went back out to our evening perch by the waterfall.
The third day we got up, ate breakfast, packed up and hit the trail. Taylor did really good until I misjudged the last leg of our trip. I thought we had about a half mile to go when we really had about three. Antisipation and disapointment really hurt his 8 year old motivation as the trail kept winding up he got slower and slower. He fought through it and we made it out almost 2 hours faster than we went in. Even Rusty was excited to see the truck.
Even though it was one of the hardest thing he had ever done, and the fact that we all got bitten by mosquitoes at least 100 times and we all had sunburned necks and faces, Taylor stated that it was the most fun he had ever had!!!
